Catch of the day is generally used to describe the fish that will be served in the restrurant on any given day.  I started using the name as the title for email I would send my kids about interesting informational tidbits I found in my mornings web surfing.  That way they would know the content of my email wasn't urgent and could read them when there was available time. 

I can imagine it being an interesting name for someone who wanted to become an information resource on a wider scale.  Now days, RSS feeds rather than email would probably be the method of choice.  In any case, there is still a need for people who like to comb the web for new developments in their area(s) of interest and report the results.
